Applicants aged 16 and above may apply for a student visa if they meet the eligibility criteria.

When to apply ?

If you're applying from outside the UK, the timing of your application depends on whether you're in or enter the UK.

Applying from outside the UK

If you are applying from outside the United Kingdom, the first opportunity to apply is six months before the start of the class/course. You will receive that decision within three weeks.

Applying from inside the UK

The earliest you can apply is on or after 3 months before your course begins. You'll have until your current visa expires. Your new course must start within 30 days of your current visa expiring. You should get a response in eight weeks or less.

Knowledge of English

To demonstrate your proficiency in English, you have two options:

  • Passing a Secure English Language Test (SELT) from an approved provider, or
  • Obtaining a GCSE, A level, Scottish National Qualification level 4 or 5, Scottish Higher or Advanced Higher in English, obtained through study at a UK school before turning 18.


Level of English

It is mandatory to prove your ability to read, write, speak, and comprehend English at a particular level on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) scale.

Level of Your English qualification depends on what you’re studying:

Degree level or above: If you are studying Degree level or above, you will need an equivalent to CEFR level B2. Moreover, you need to score 59 or higher in all four abilities (Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening) in PTE Academic, and 5.5 overall and in all four skills of IELTS/IELTS for UKVI3.

If you are enrolled in a higher education program, If you are studying at the degree level or higher, your Higher Education Provider (HEP) can assess your English level. This means they may ask you to take another test.

This must still correspond to CEFR level B2.

Below degree level: If you’re studying below degree level, you will need a CEFR level B1. Moreover, you need to score at least 43 In each of the four skills (Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening), and 4.0 overall and in each of the four skills for UKVI/IELTS.

How long you can stay?

How long you'll be permitted to stay is determined by the scope of your course and on what you've already completed in the UK. If you're 18 or older and your university degree is at degree level, you can stay in the UK for up to 5 years. If it’s below bachelor level, you can stay in the UK for up to 2 years.

Staying longer in the UK

If you want to remain in the UK for some time, you might be eligible to submit an application for an extension in your student visa, or you may switch over to a Graduate visa to stay there for at least 2 years. After successfully completing your course, then you may switch to a Graduate visa to remain in the country for at least 2 years.

When you can travel to the UK ?

Regarding travel to the UK, you may arrive before your course starts, with specific timelines depending on the course duration. If your course lasts for six months or less, you may arrive up to one week before the start date, while those with a course lasting more than six months can arrive up to one month before.

However, it's crucial to note that you must not travel to the UK before the start date stated on your visa, regardless of your course start date.
