Eligibility

Your job
To qualify for a Skilled Worker visa, you must:

  • Work for a UK employer that’s been approved by the Home Office
  • Your employer may have added notes to a document showing your role in the UK to do a job that’s on the list of eligible occupations
  • The minimum amount paid to you must have some association with your profession.


Before applying for your visa, you must have a confirmed job offer.

Knowledge of English

You must be able to speak, read, write and comprehend English. You will generally have to prove your knowledge of the English language when you apply. It is mandatory to demonstrate proficiency in English language by achieving at least level B1 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) scale. The minimum required PTE score for UK visas is 43 or higher in each of the four areas of Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening, and for IELTS for UKVI, the minimum requirement is an overall score of 4.0 and at least 4.0 in each of the four aforementioned language skills.

How long can you stay ?

Your visa is also valid for up to 5 years. You will have to make changes to extend your visa or apply to update your visa if you change jobs or employers.

Proving your identity and providing supporting documents

As part of your application, you must present proof of your identification. Depending on your origin and what type of passport you have. You’ll either:

  • You take a fingerprint and photo at a visa office to get a biometric residence permit.
  • You’ll use the ID Check app to scan your identity document via the UK Immigration: ID Check app - you will also be able to sign into your UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account.
  • You will be aware of what you must do when applying.
  • Your passport and documents may need to be kept while processing your application.
  • You may need to travel to get to your nearest visa application centre (this could be in another country).

How long it takes to get a decision ?

Once your documents have been received, you’ll get a decision about your case within three weeks of submitting your application.

You’ll be contacted if your application takes longer, for example, because:

  • Your supporting documents need to be verified
  • You need to attend an interview
  • Your circumstances, such as a criminal conviction, can impact your decision.


You may be able to pay for a faster decision - you’ll be informed whether you can, while applying.

After you apply

You can ask to cancel your application. You will only receive a full refund from UKVI if it has yet to begin processing your request.
